Pelotas lies on the low plains of southern Rio Grande do Sul, beside the São Gonçalo Channel. The channel links Lagoa Mirim with the much larger Lagoa dos Patos. The land is almost perfectly flat, and the city answers it with a regular grid of long, straight streets. The grid runs inland from the channel and is interrupted only by small creeks and squares.
In the nineteenth century the city grew rich on charqueadas, the salt-beef works that lined the local streams. That wealth paid for the eclectic mansions and theatres around Praça Coronel Pedro Osório. Pelotas is also known across Brazil for its sweets, a tradition of Portuguese-style confectionery that the city celebrates with an annual festival.
To the east, the urban grid thins out toward the shore of the Lagoa dos Patos, where the Laranjal district follows a long sandy edge. On the eastern side, the city reaches the Lagoa dos Patos at Laranjal. A long curve of beach and low vegetation gives the map a soft, open edge.
