Pemangkat is a coastal town in Sambas Regency, in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan on Borneo. It sits where the Sambas River widens and meets the South China Sea. Water frames the map on two sides, and the town's streets fill a narrow strip of land between the shore and the rising ground behind it.
The town has long been a fishing and trading port, with boats moored along the river and the coast. Like several towns in this part of West Kalimantan, it has a significant Chinese-Indonesian community, and temples and shophouses are part of its streetscape. Inland, low hills and plantations surround the settlement.
A Pemangkat map poster brings together the three forces that shape the town: sea, river and hill. The coastline gives a strong edge, the river mouth opens wide beside it, and the compact grid of streets sits in between.
The river widens as it meets the sea next to the town. This forms a broad opening of water that dominates one side of the map.
The town faces the South China Sea along a clear shoreline. Harbour areas for fishing boats show up along the water's edge.
Pemangkat's streets are packed into the land between the shore and the hills. They form a dense core that thins quickly inland.
