Peterhof lies on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, west of Saint Petersburg. Its plan still follows the vision of Peter the Great. A long ridge divides the Upper Garden on the high ground from the Lower Park, which slopes down to the water. From above, the ensemble reads as pure geometry: axes, radiating alleys, clipped rectangles and a straight channel cut toward the sea.
That channel runs from the Grand Cascade below the Grand Palace directly to the gulf, and it forms the backbone of any Peterhof map poster. On either side, diagonal paths spread through the woods of the Lower Park. They lead to smaller pavilions and dozens of fountains, which are fed by gravity from springs on the higher ground inland.
Beyond the parks, the town itself is quieter and more regular, with residential streets and later districts spreading south of the palace grounds. The palaces and parks form part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments. In black and white, the contrast is striking: formal Baroque planning against the open, horizontal line of the gulf.
A perfectly straight canal runs from the Grand Cascade to the Gulf of Finland, splitting the Lower Park into two mirrored halves and anchoring the whole composition.
Long, straight avenues fan out through the Lower Park at precise angles, drawing a star-like pattern of white lines across the wooded ground.
The northern edge of the map is a long, gentle curve of coast, giving the formal gardens a calm, open horizon of water.

Ko e hā ʻa Peterhof
Peterhof is a place people visit once and remember for its fountains, its symmetry and the view to the sea. A map poster of it looks like an architectural drawing and suits studies, hallways and living rooms.
