Ishim floodplain
East of the city the river winds through wide lowland scattered with oxbow lakes and old channels. These natural curves stand out against the straight urban grid.

Petropavl sits on the high right bank of the Ishim River, known in Kazakh as the Esil, in the far north of Kazakhstan close to the Russian border. From above, the city is a fairly regular grid that ends abruptly at the river terrace. Below it, the floodplain is full of looping channels and small lakes.
The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through the city, and the rail lines and yards form a long, firm stroke across the map. The city began in 1752 as the fortress of Saint Peter, built on a line of defences along the steppe frontier, and the older central streets still keep a planned layout.
Petropavl is the northernmost regional capital in Kazakhstan, and its winters are long and severe. A Petropavl map poster shows the contrast between the orderly city on the bank and the meandering water below it.
East of the city the river winds through wide lowland scattered with oxbow lakes and old channels. These natural curves stand out against the straight urban grid.
The main railway runs through Petropavl, and its tracks and yards form one of the longest continuous lines on the map.
The city grew from an eighteenth-century fortress. The central streets are laid out on a planned, regular pattern above the river terrace.
