Phnom Penh stands at the Chaktomuk, or Four Faces, where the Tonlé Sap flows into the Mekong and the Bassac branches off to the south. From above, the rivers form a broad cross of water on the city's eastern edge, and the Chroy Changvar peninsula juts between the Tonlé Sap and the Mekong opposite the old centre.
The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda face the confluence along Sisowath Quay, and behind them the city spreads west in a grid laid out largely during the French period. Many streets are identified by number rather than name, an unusual system that makes the plan feel methodical. Wide boulevards such as Norodom and Monivong run north to south through it.
The city takes its name from Wat Phnom, a small hill topped by a temple where, according to legend, a woman named Penh founded a shrine. Newer districts and satellite projects now extend in every direction, some on former lakes and wetlands. A Phnom Penh map poster places the grid against the rivers, which remain the city's defining feature.
Four river arms meet in front of the Royal Palace, forming a wide open expanse of water that dominates the eastern side of the poster and frames the old centre.
West of the riverfront, a grid of numbered streets crossed by long boulevards gives the centre a regular, measured rhythm that reads cleanly in black and white.
The low wooded hill at the north of the old city, circled by a road, appears as a small round green shape and marks the city's legendary founding site.

Phnom Penh holds different meanings for different people, a family home, a posting, a long stay by the river. A map of the city keeps the confluence and the familiar numbered streets in view long after you have left.
Name the print after a street number, a neighbourhood or a date, and adjust the subtitle and coordinates line to match. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, and look at a free 900 px preview first.
