Plainfield is a city in Union County, New Jersey, on the flat land just south of the Watchung Mountains. It grew as a railroad suburb in the nineteenth century. Today NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line still runs through it and forms a clear diagonal across the street pattern. Downtown sits close to the tracks, with a regular grid of blocks spreading out around it.
The city is known as the Queen City. Its residential neighbourhoods include many well-preserved Victorian and early twentieth-century houses, several of them protected as historic districts.
