Pontypridd grew at the meeting of the Rhondda and Taff valleys in south Wales. Its name refers to a bridge, and its best-known landmark is the Old Bridge. This single stone arch across the Taff was completed in 1756 by William Edwards, and for a long time it was the longest single-span bridge in Britain.
From above, the rivers explain the town. The Taff flows north to south through the centre, and the Rhondda joins it from the west. Rows of terraced houses run along the contours of the valley sides, forming long parallel lines. Ynysangharad Park fills a flat bend next to the river.
A Pontypridd map poster shows a classic valleys town: streets packed onto the valley floor, terraces stepping up the slopes, and the river running through the middle. The town is also where Evan and James James wrote the Welsh national anthem.
William Edwards's 1756 arch crosses the Taff in the town centre. It is a small detail on the map but the one most visitors look for first.
Long rows of houses follow the valley sides at steady heights. They draw a fine, parallel pattern that shows the terrain without any shading.
The park occupies a flat stretch beside the Taff, east of the centre. It includes the lido and a memorial to the authors of the national anthem.
