Prato lies northwest of Florence on the plain of the Bisenzio river, where the valley opens out from the Apennine foothills. The historic centre is enclosed by medieval walls that form a distinctive hexagonal outline, one of the clearest old-town shapes in Tuscany. Outside the walls, the city spreads across the plain in a looser mix of residential streets, industrial districts and ring roads.
The city has been a centre of textile production since the Middle Ages, and cloth-making still defines its economy. It is also home to one of the largest Chinese communities in Italy, largely linked to the garment industry. The cathedral has an external pulpit carved by Donatello and Michelozzo, and the Castello dell'Imperatore was built for Frederick II.

The Bisenzio flows south along the eastern side of the old town, a slender line of water that separates the historic core from the districts across the river.
Textile districts
