Puerto Plata sits on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, where the land drops quickly from Mount Isabel de Torres to the Atlantic. From above, the old centre is a tight grid of short blocks, and the Malecón follows the shoreline in a long, gentle arc. The harbour opens on the western side, while newer neighbourhoods spread east along the coast and inland toward the foothills.
The mountain shapes every map of the town. Its contour lines crowd in close behind the rooftops, and a cable car climbs from the edge of the city to the summit. On the point beside the harbour mouth stands the Fortaleza San Felipe, a Spanish colonial fort whose small, angular outline is easy to find at the tip of the coast.
A Puerto Plata map poster reduces this setting to line and white space: the dense streets of the centre, the unbroken edge of the sea, and the thinner pattern of roads fading toward the slopes. The town is also known for its painted wooden houses from the nineteenth century and for amber from the surrounding hills. Neither shows on a map, but both are part of what the lines stand for.
The seafront avenue follows the Atlantic shore for several kilometres. On the poster it becomes one smooth curve that separates the grid of the town from open water and gives the composition a strong lower edge.
The mountain rises directly behind the city and is reached by cable car. It fills the southern part of the frame with sparse, winding roads, which shows how little flat ground the town has to build on.
A sixteenth-century Spanish fortress on the headland beside the harbour. Its compact footprint marks the spot where the old town meets the entrance to the port.

People who have lived on the north coast, or spent a long stay there, often want something that holds the whole place at once: the curve of the seafront, the mountain behind it, the streets between. The high contrast reads clearly from across a room.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, whether that is the town's name, a family house or a wedding date. Then choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand and Paper suit the warm, coastal feel of the place.
