Pupiales sits high in the Andes of southern Colombia, in the department of Nariño, a short distance from the border with Ecuador. From above, the town is a compact knot of blocks around a central square, with rural roads running out through a mosaic of cultivated plots that cover the rolling upland in every direction.
The surrounding landscape shapes the map more than the town does. Field boundaries, narrow tracks and the occasional stream cut fine lines across the slopes, and the built-up area thins quickly into farmland. It is highland agricultural country, where the pattern of small holdings gives the terrain a quilted, almost textile quality when drawn in thin black lines.
A Pupiales map poster shows this balance between a modest urban core and the working land around it. The streets form a tidy, readable centre, while the rural network spreading outwards adds density and rhythm to the edges. Rendered in monochrome, the composition feels quiet and grounded, much like the place itself.
The town is organised around a main plaza, with a regular pattern of blocks radiating from it in the colonial manner common to Andean towns across Colombia.
Beyond the last streets, a patchwork of small cultivated plots and field edges covers the uplands, giving the outer parts of the map a dense, woven texture.
Pupiales lies in the far south of Nariño close to Ecuador, and the regional roads leaving town hint at its place within this frontier highland corridor.
