Ko e mape
Pushkin, known historically as Tsarskoye Selo, lies about 25 kilometres south of central St Petersburg. From above, the town is split between two clear forms: a regular grid of streets to the east and the large landscaped grounds of the Catherine and Alexander parks to the west. Ponds, canals and long avenues make the parks as legible on a map as the town itself.
This was the summer residence of the Russian imperial family. The Catherine Palace, home to the reconstructed Amber Room, and the Alexander Palace stand inside the parks. The poet Alexander Pushkin studied at the Lyceum next to the palace, and the town was renamed in his honour in 1937. Russia's first public railway, opened in 1837, ran from here to St Petersburg.
A Pushkin map poster shows a planned town in the fullest sense. Every avenue, pond and garden path was designed, and the drawing reflects that order. It is one of the most balanced compositions among the suburbs of St Petersburg.
Formal gardens near the palace give way to a landscape park around the Great Pond. On the poster its paths and water shapes form an intricate pattern.
East of the parks, the historic town was laid out in straight, regular blocks. Printed in fine lines, it contrasts clearly with the curving park paths.
The larger, wilder park to the north combines canals, ponds and straight alleys, creating wide open areas on the map around the Alexander Palace.
