Qipan lies in northern Jiangsu, on the wide alluvial plain between the old course of the Yellow River and the hills of Shandong. The land is nearly flat, and the map shows it: roads run in long straight lines, drainage canals follow them, and the town itself is a compact cluster of blocks within this larger pattern of fields.
Settlements in this part of the province tend to spread along a main road, with a denser centre and villages dotted across the surrounding farmland. Waterways here are mostly man-made, straight channels built for irrigation and drainage, and they give the drawing a precise, ruled look. The result is a map built from right angles, with little to disturb the grid.
The name is a pleasing coincidence: Mandarin speakers will hear qipan as the word for a chessboard, and the landscape around it, divided into regular squares of field and canal, suits the idea. A Qipan map poster is less about landmarks and more about that pattern, drawn cleanly and at a large scale.
Roads cross the plain in long, unbroken lines, meeting at near right angles. They give the poster its main structure.
Straight channels run beside roads and field edges. On the map they double many lines and emphasise the grid.
The town is a small, dense cluster in open farmland. The contrast between its blocks and the empty fields around it is what makes the poster work.

Ko e hā ʻa Qipan
For families from Qipan, a map is a way to point at home and say this is where we come from. For everyone else, the chessboard-like plain makes it an interesting piece of graphic design.
You can change the title and subtitle, add a date or a name in Chinese or English, and edit the coordinates line. Pick one of five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
