Qom lies south of Tehran, on the dry plain at the edge of Iran's central desert. The Qom River, often dry, runs through the city, and on a map its wide channel is a clear pale band dividing districts. Around it, the street network combines the denser, irregular lanes of the older centre with long straight avenues in newer areas.
The city is one of the most important religious centres in Iran. At its heart is the shrine of Fatima Masumeh, with its golden dome and courtyards, and Qom is home to major Shia seminaries that draw students from many countries. To the east lies the vast salt lake known as Daryacheh-ye Namak.
A Qom map poster centres on the shrine and the river, with the city fanning out across the plain. The straight new avenues and the organic older streets meet around this core, and the desert at the edges leaves the map framed by open space.
The shrine of Fatima Masumeh and its courtyards form a large, orderly open area at the centre, the focus of the city's older streets.
The Qom River's broad channel crosses the city, a pale strip that divides districts and is bridged at several points.
Beyond the built area, the street network ends abruptly at dry plain, leaving a clean edge around the city.

Ko e hā ʻa Qom
Qom is meaningful for pilgrims, for students who spent years in its seminaries, and for families who call it home. The central shrine and river give the map a strong, symmetrical focus.
