Rambouillet lies south-west of Paris in the Yvelines, on the edge of the Forêt de Rambouillet, one of the largest forests in the Île-de-France. On a map the town is small and compact, while the château's park extends beside it, a large formal landscape of straight canals, long avenues and islands laid out in precise geometry.
The château was a royal and later presidential residence, and its grounds contain two well-known features: the Queen's Dairy, built for Marie Antoinette, and the Bergerie nationale, where merino sheep have been raised since the reign of Louis XVI. Beyond the park, the forest surrounds the town with a dense, uninterrupted mass of woodland.
