Reading lies in south-eastern Pennsylvania, on the eastern bank of the Schuylkill River. The river forms the city's western edge and curves around it, while Mount Penn rises steeply on the east. Between the two, the city is laid out in a tight grid of row-house streets. It is one of the most regular and compact street patterns among Pennsylvania's older cities.
Penn Street runs east from the river to the foot of the mountain. It is the main axis of the downtown and the line around which the grid is organised. On the ridge above it sits the Pagoda, a Japanese-style building from the early twentieth century that has become the city's best-known symbol. A Reading map poster shows the grid stopping abruptly where the slope begins.
Reading was also once a major rail centre. The Reading Railroad, remembered by many through the Monopoly board, took its name from the city, and old rail corridors still cut through the street pattern. South of the centre, Neversink Mountain forms another forested hill, framing the city with the river and Mount Penn.
The main street runs from the Schuylkill towards Mount Penn. It anchors a dense, regular grid of row-house blocks that fills the valley floor.
The forested ridge on the city's east side stops the street grid sharply. Its winding roads lead up to the hilltop Pagoda.
The river curves along Reading's western edge with bridges crossing to West Reading and Wyomissing. It gives the grid a smooth, natural boundary.

Ko e hā ʻa Reading
Reading is a city people remember through its row houses, its Pagoda and its railroad. A map of it suits anyone who grew up in Berks County, and anyone who has spent time on a Monopoly board wondering where the railroad went.
Customise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with your street, a neighbourhood or a year. Then choose one of five styles. Noir shows the grid against the dark mountain particularly clearly, while Paper feels more vintage.
