Rivne lies in the forested northwest of Ukraine, on the Ustia, a small river that winds through the city from south to north. On a map, the river and its parks form a green corridor through the centre. The streets on either side follow a mix of older, irregular lanes and later, straighter avenues.
The city is the administrative centre of Rivne Oblast, a region of forests, lakes and wetlands running up to the Belarusian border. Its central streets carry the marks of several periods, from nineteenth-century buildings to Soviet-era apartment districts. Beyond the city, the region is home to the Tunnel of Love, a railway line enclosed by trees near the village of Klevan.
