Royston lies on the northern edge of Hertfordshire, close to the Cambridgeshire border. It grew at the crossing of two very old routes: Ermine Street, the Roman road running north, and the Icknield Way, an ancient track along the chalk ridge. That crossroads is still the centre of the town on a map.
From the crossing, streets spread out in every direction. The historic centre is tight and irregular, and newer residential areas grow on the edges. To the south and west the land rises into chalk hills. Therfield Heath, a wide stretch of open downland, keeps buildings off the slope and gives the town a sharp green edge.
Under the crossroads lies Royston Cave, a small man-made chamber cut into the chalk and carved with mysterious figures whose origins are still debated. A Royston map poster shows the old crossing at the centre, the growing town around it and the open chalk hills beyond.

Open chalk downland rises to the southwest. It forms a large, empty green space on the map that clearly defines the edge of the town.
