Rubanda is in south-western Uganda, in the Kigezi highlands near the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is some of the steepest farmed land in East Africa. Hills rise one after another, and their slopes are cut into terraces that give the landscape a distinctive ribbed look.
From above, the town is small and follows the shape of the land. Its streets gather where the ground allows, and roads climb and wind to reach neighbouring valleys and villages. On a map, those curves are the clearest sign of how steep the country is.
The same highlands hold Lake Bunyonyi, known for its many islands and its terraced shores, a short distance away. A Rubanda map poster shows the winding roads and the small town that sits among the hills and terraces.
Roads curve and double back to climb the steep hills, forming looping lines that give the map a lot of movement.
The slopes around Rubanda are farmed in terraces, one of the defining features of the Kigezi highlands and of the land around the town.
The built-up area is compact, gathered on the more usable ground among the hills before giving way to farms and scattered homes.
