Rùm is the largest of the Small Isles, south of Skye in the Inner Hebrides. It is roughly diamond-shaped and almost entirely wild, dominated by the Rùm Cuillin, a cluster of steep, rocky peaks in the south. From above there is very little to draw beyond the coastline, a few tracks and the long inlet of Loch Scresort on the east side.
Most of the island is a National Nature Reserve and has served for decades as an outdoor laboratory for ecological research, including long-running studies of red deer. Rùm is also where white-tailed eagles were reintroduced to Britain from 1975. Its mountain slopes hold a very large breeding colony of Manx shearwaters, which nest in burrows high on the peaks.
Kinloch, the only village, sits at the head of Loch Scresort beside Kinloch Castle, a turn-of-the-century mansion built for a Lancashire textile family. A Rùm map poster is a portrait of emptiness in the best sense. It shows a strong coastline, one sheltered bay, and a few lines of track crossing to distant glens such as Kilmory and Harris.
The island's highest ground, a tight group of sharp peaks in the south, fills that part of the map with blank, roadless space that speaks of height and weather.
This sea loch cuts into the east coast and shelters the ferry slipway and Kinloch. It is the single point of arrival and the only settled corner of Rùm.
Two long rough tracks cross from Kinloch to the far coasts. These thin lines are among the few man-made marks on the island's interior.

Ko e hā ʻa Rùm
Rùm draws walkers who have crossed the Cuillin ridge, naturalists who have watched deer or eagles there, and anyone who took the ferry from Mallaig and felt the island's scale. Its map is bold and sparse, closer to a landscape drawing than a street plan, and it holds a room well.
Put the dates of your visit or the name of a route in the title and subtitle, and edit the coordinates line. Choose among five styles; Noir gives the mountains dramatic weight. Download print-ready files for $9 in six sizes, or order a printed matte poster, framed in wood if you prefer.
