Ruma lies in the Srem region of Vojvodina, on flat, fertile land between the wooded ridge of Fruška Gora to the north and the Sava river further south. The town's map is notably regular. Long straight streets cross at right angles and form rectangular blocks around a central square, and the pattern continues evenly into the surrounding residential areas.
This order comes from eighteenth-century planning, when the town was developed under the Pejačević family and laid out on a clear grid. The lake on the edge of town appears as a soft, irregular shape of water among green space. It is a natural counterpoint to the strict geometry of the streets.
