Rutoma lies in the Western Region of Uganda, a little south of the equator, in a landscape of rolling hills and green valleys. From above it looks like a settlement shaped by the terrain rather than a planned grid. Roads follow the ridges and valley floors, and homes spread outward along them into the farmland around it.
The wider region is largely agricultural, and the map shows this in a patchwork of small plots, tracks and scattered homesteads between the denser areas. Main roads connect Rutoma to neighbouring towns and trading centres. Footpaths and minor lanes branch off towards homes on the hillsides, and water, where it appears, runs through the lower ground.
