Saidpur is a town in the Ghazipur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the Ganges. From above, the river is by far the largest feature. It is wide, with sandbars that appear and disappear with the seasons. The town sits on the higher ground of the bank, with its streets running down towards ghats and the water's edge.
The older part of town is made up of narrow, irregular lanes and tightly packed buildings. It has grown over generations rather than being planned. Beyond it, roads lead out across the flat, intensively farmed Gangetic plain, where small fields and scattered villages cover the land in a fine, even pattern.
