Saint-Jean-d'Aulps lies in the Vallée d'Aulps in the Chablais area of Haute-Savoie, along the Dranse de Morzine between Thonon-les-Bains and Morzine. The commune stretches along the valley, with the main road and the river running side by side and hamlets spread across the slopes on either side. The village is known for the ruins of the Abbey of Aulps, a medieval Cistercian abbey whose remains now form a heritage site.
