Saltillo, capital of Coahuila, sits on a high valley in northern Mexico, framed to the south and east by the Sierra de Zapalinamé. From above, the city spreads across fairly flat ground, with a compact historic centre and wider, newer districts extending north toward Ramos Arizpe, where large automotive plants stand.
The historic centre is anchored by the Cathedral of Santiago, known for its elaborate baroque facade, and the plaza in front of it. Saltillo is also known for the sarape, the colourful woven blanket long associated with the city, and for the Museo del Desierto, dedicated to the Chihuahuan Desert.
A Saltillo map poster captures the city's setting at the foot of the mountains. The street grid meets the slopes abruptly in the south, while to the north highways and industrial areas stretch outward across the dry plain.
Mountains rise steeply at the southern and eastern edges of the city, giving the map a strong natural boundary against the street grid.
The compact grid around the cathedral and main plaza forms the oldest part of the city, with narrow streets and small blocks.
To the north, wide roads and large industrial blocks extend toward Ramos Arizpe, reflecting Saltillo's role in Mexico's automotive industry.
