San Vicente lies south of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, where the city gives way to open pampas. On a map the town is a regular grid of square blocks around a central plaza. Next to it lies a lagoon with a soft, rounded outline that contrasts with the straight streets. Farmland, country estates and rural roads stretch out in every direction.
The town is closely linked with Juan Domingo Perón. His country house, the Quinta 17 de Octubre, stands here and now serves as a museum, and his remains were moved to a mausoleum on the grounds in 2006. For many Argentines this makes San Vicente a place of political memory as well as a quiet provincial town.
