Sarqant, also written Sarkand, lies in the Zhetysu region of southeastern Kazakhstan, where the plains of Semirechye rise toward the Dzungarian Alatau. On the map it looks like a long, low town following a river that runs down from the mountains, with streets laid out on the gently sloping ground.
The street plan is simple and largely rectilinear, as in many towns of the region, with long streets running parallel to each other and short cross streets between them. Gardens and plots divide the blocks, and the built-up area fades into farmland and pasture at its edges.
The mountains to the south and east shape everything here. Meltwater feeds the river and the irrigated land around the town, and the higher slopes are used for summer grazing. A Sarqant map poster shows a quiet town at the point where the steppe meets the foothills.
