Shamshabad sits on the southern edge of Hyderabad in Rangareddy district, and for most people its name means one thing: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, which opened here in 2008. The airport shapes much of the map. Its long runways, taxiways and terminal area take up a huge rectangle of land beside the older town.
The original town is still there. It is a compact cluster of streets with its own markets and neighbourhoods, and it sits close to the main highway south toward Bengaluru. Around it, the Outer Ring Road and the expressway to the airport draw broad, sweeping curves, and new residential and commercial developments are gradually filling the land between them.
