Shibetsu is a city in northern Hokkaido's Kamikawa area, set in the upper basin of the Teshio River, one of the island's longest rivers. From above, the town centre follows the orderly grid that settlers laid out across Hokkaido, with straight streets and even blocks. Beyond it, farmland spreads across the valley floor, and forested hills rise on either side.
The city is known across Japan for sheep, especially the Suffolk breed, and has built a local identity around sheep farming and lamb. Winters here are long and snowy, and the wide, rectangular field patterns around the town reflect agricultural planning suited to that climate. Rail and road connections follow the valley north and south.
A Shibetsu map poster shows a clear, well-ordered town inside a large, soft landscape. The grid gives the composition structure, while the Teshio and its tributaries add curving lines through the fields. It is a clean print for anyone connected to northern Hokkaido.
Shibetsu's centre follows a straight Hokkaido grid, with streets meeting at right angles and blocks of similar size across the town.
The Teshio and its tributaries wind through the basin, and their curves contrast sharply with the straight lines of streets and fields.
Farmland around the city is divided into large rectangles, extending the grid into the countryside and giving the frame a calm rhythm.
