Shibetsu sits on the eastern coast of Hokkaido, where the Shibetsu River flows into the Nemuro Strait. Across the water lies Kunashir island, visible on clear days. The town's streets follow a modest grid set back from the shore, a layout common to Hokkaido settlements that were laid out in the modern era rather than growing slowly from older villages.
Inland, the land opens onto the Konsen plateau, a region of dairy farms divided by long, straight windbreak forests. These tree belts form a vast rectilinear lattice, famous for being visible from space, and they give the countryside around Shibetsu a remarkably ordered look on any map. Rivers cut across it in slow, meandering lines.
A Shibetsu map poster pairs two very different geometries: the soft curve of the coast and river mouth, and the strict lines of the farmland behind it. The Shibetsu River is also known for its salmon runs, and its course through town is one of the clearest features on the print.
The Shibetsu River meets the sea at the town, its final bends drawing a soft line through the streets before opening into the Nemuro Strait.
A long, gently curving coastline runs along the eastern edge of the map, with the strait separating Hokkaido from Kunashir island beyond it.
Inland, straight belts of forest divide the dairy country of the Konsen plateau into a vast lattice, one of the most recognisable man-made patterns in Hokkaido.

Ko e hā ʻa Shibetsu
Shibetsu appeals to people who know Hokkaido's eastern edge, from those who grew up here to travellers heading toward Shiretoko. With its coast, river and grid, the composition feels both remote and carefully ordered.
You can edit the poster's title, subtitle and coordinates line, and five styles are available. Blueprint and Noir suit the cool northern coastline especially well. Choose HD files in six sizes or a printed poster shipped from one of our print partners.
