Shimonoseki sits at the western end of Honshu, Japan's main island, where the Kanmon Strait narrows to a few hundred metres across from Kitakyushu on Kyushu. On a map, the city is a long coastal settlement squeezed between steep hills and the water. The strait bends around its southern tip, and the Sea of Japan runs along its western shore.
The Kanmon Bridge crosses the strait near its narrowest point, and road, rail and pedestrian tunnels run beneath it, so on the map some lines simply stop at the water. Ferries leave the port for Busan in South Korea. Along the waterfront around the Karato fish market, the streets are dense and irregular and follow the curve of the shore.
History here stays close to the water. The sea battle of Dan-no-ura, which ended the Genpei War in 1185, was fought in the strait. The treaty that ended the First Sino-Japanese War was signed in the city in 1895. Shimonoseki is also known for fugu, or pufferfish. A Shimonoseki map poster captures the strait, the bridge and the long shoreline in a single frame.

The suspension bridge spans the strait near its narrowest point, one clean line joining two islands. Road and rail tunnels run beneath the water, out of sight.
Steep hills press close to the coast, so the city stretches in a long band along the water. Its streets follow the shore rather than a grid.

Ko e hā ʻa Shimonoseki
Shimonoseki is a place of crossings: between islands, between seas, and for many travellers between Japan and Korea. A map of the strait appeals to people who live there, people who have passed through by ferry or train, and anyone who loves coastlines.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the maritime subject especially well. Download six print sizes for $9, or order a printed poster.
