Shovot is a town in Uzbekistan's Khorezm Region, in the irrigated oasis of the lower Amu Darya. The region is located between two deserts, and the farmland depends on a dense network of canals. The town shares its name with one of the larger canals in the area.
From above, water organises the entire landscape. Canals and irrigation ditches branch across the fields, and roads and village streets follow them. A Shovot map poster shows the town centre linked to a web of waterways that spreads out in every direction.
The town lies not far from Urgench and the historic city of Khiva, close to the border with Turkmenistan. Its map shows the everyday working part of Khorezm: farmland, canal banks, and villages strung along the water.
