Shuangcheng is now a district of Harbin, lying to the southwest of the provincial capital on the fertile, very flat Songnen plain. Its urban centre is laid out on a regular grid of straight streets, and around it the farmland is divided into large rectangular fields, so the map feels orderly from the centre to the edges.
The town has its origins in the Qing dynasty, when the area was settled by Manchu banner households moving north to farm the plain. Today it is an agricultural and food processing centre, with dairy and grain production playing a large part in the local economy.
