Shuanglu is a town in western Chongqing, in the hilly eastern part of the Sichuan Basin. The terrain here is a series of low ridges and shallow valleys, and settlements follow it closely. From above, the town is a cluster of streets arranged along roads that curve with the landscape. Newer blocks occupy the flatter ground, and older lanes sit near the centre.
The countryside around Shuanglu is a mosaic typical of the region. Terraced fields step up the slopes, small ponds and reservoirs fill the hollows, and narrow roads link scattered farmhouses. On the map these features create an intricate, fragmented pattern, quite different from the regular grids of cities on the plains of northern and eastern China.
