Silver Spring lies directly north of Washington, pressed against the District of Columbia's boundary. Its downtown grew around the junction of Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road, beside the railway and the Red Line Metro station, and from there residential streets spread out in all directions through leafy suburban neighbourhoods.
The name dates back to 1840, when Francis Preston Blair discovered a spring with flecks of mica that glittered like silver and built his country estate nearby. A Silver Spring map poster shows how the area has been divided by the long green corridors of Sligo Creek Park and Rock Creek, which run through the suburb in wooded valleys.
The Capital Beltway crosses the northern part of the area, while downtown includes landmarks such as the restored AFI Silver Theatre. Because Silver Spring is not incorporated, its boundaries are loose, and the map moves smoothly from dense downtown blocks into quieter, curving residential streets.
Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road meet beside the railway and Metro station, forming the densest part of Silver Spring and its commercial core.
Sligo Creek and Rock Creek run through the area in long wooded parks, drawing green lines between neighbourhoods on either side.
The straight diagonal line of the DC border marks the southern edge, one of the few ruler-straight lines in the suburb's street pattern.

Ko e hā ʻa Silver Spring
Silver Spring appeals to people who live in its neighbourhoods, those who commuted from its Metro station for years, and families who moved to the Washington area and settled just across the District line. The creek parks give the map a natural structure.
