Sol’-Iletsk lies in Orenburg Oblast, close to the border with Kazakhstan, in open steppe south of the Ural river. From above, the town has a fairly regular grid of streets, with larger industrial areas connected to salt mining. The surrounding land is flat and open, with farmland and rail lines extending in several directions.
The town owes its existence to the large rock salt deposit beneath it, which has been mined for centuries. Around old mine workings, several small salt lakes have formed, and the lake called Razval is so salty that swimmers float easily, which has made the town a popular summer resort.
A Sol’-Iletsk map poster shows a town where the ground below has shaped the plan above: the grid of streets, the mine sites and the small, sharply defined lakes. It is a distinctive composition for a steppe town.
A group of small lakes lies near the edge of town, their compact, clearly defined shapes standing out against the surrounding streets and land.
Industrial sites connected to salt extraction form larger blocks on the map, with rail sidings leading to them.
Residential streets follow a mostly regular grid, set within flat, open steppe that stretches toward the Kazakh border.
