Contour-following streets
Many roads bend along the hillsides instead of running straight, so the street pattern itself traces the shape of the land and gives the map a soft, layered texture.

Souk Ahras lies in the hills of northeastern Algeria, close to the border with Tunisia and at an elevation of roughly 700 metres. The city is built on uneven ground, and its map shows it. Streets curve with the contours, blocks change orientation from one quarter to the next, and the older core gives way to newer districts spreading across the surrounding slopes.
In antiquity the town was Thagaste, a Roman-era settlement best known as the birthplace of Saint Augustine in 354. The Medjerda River, which later crosses Tunisia to reach the Mediterranean, rises in the mountains nearby. Forested hills cover much of the country around the city, and its name is often translated as market of lions, a nod to its long role as a regional market town.
A Souk Ahras map poster reads almost like a topographic sketch. Without any contour lines, the curving roads alone describe the hills, and tighter bends at the edges show where the terrain steepens. The denser centre holds together as a knot of short streets, while longer roads lead out toward the valleys and the border.
Many roads bend along the hillsides instead of running straight, so the street pattern itself traces the shape of the land and gives the map a soft, layered texture.
The modern city occupies the site of Roman Thagaste, where Saint Augustine was born. Few maps of a mid-sized Algerian town carry quite that much history beneath their streets.
The river that becomes the main waterway of Tunisia begins in the uplands around the city, and its upper valleys cut into the hills that surround the town.

Ko e hā ʻa Souk Ahras
Souk Ahras suits someone with roots in eastern Algeria, or a reader of Augustine who wants a map of the place where his story begins. The hill streets also make an interesting design for those with no connection at all, which is not true of every city.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be changed, so the poster can read Thagaste as well as Souk Ahras, or carry a date. Five styles are available, and the HD download includes six print sizes as 300 DPI PNG and print-ready PDF files.
