Speke lies on the southern edge of Liverpool, along the north shore of the Mersey estuary. From above it has sharp contrasts. The long, straight runway of Liverpool John Lennon Airport runs parallel to the river, large industrial and business parks fill much of the land, and planned residential estates sit inland from them.
Speke Hall, a half-timbered Tudor manor house now looked after by the National Trust, stands on open ground close to the estuary and the airport. The district grew in the twentieth century as a planned suburb with housing and industry, and the airport has been part of its landscape for decades.
A Speke map poster shows these different parts side by side. The broad band of the Mersey sits along one edge, the runway stands out as a strong geometric line, and the rounded streets of the housing estates contrast with the large blocks of industrial land. It is an unusual view of Liverpool.
