St. Albert lies just northwest of Edmonton, on the Sturgeon River. The river loops across the city from west to east, and a broad corridor of parkland follows it the whole way. On a map, this green, winding band divides the city into north and south halves and gives it a clear, natural centre.
The settlement began in 1861, when Father Albert Lacombe founded a mission on the hill above the river, making it one of the oldest communities in Alberta. The old mission site and the historic core still sit above the valley, while curving residential neighbourhoods fan out on the prairie beyond.
A St. Albert map poster shows a suburban city with a strong natural line: the Sturgeon River, its parks and trails, and the hill where the town began. The looping residential streets on either side add fine detail to a calm, open composition.
The river winds through the centre of the city in a series of loops, the defining curve that organises the whole map.
A long trail system follows the river through St. Albert, a continuous ribbon of parkland that stands out across the poster.
The hill above the river where Father Lacombe founded the mission in 1861 marks the historic origin of the city.
