Stains is a commune in Seine-Saint-Denis, just north of Saint-Denis in the inner suburbs of Paris. It is a thoroughly urban place. From above, it is a tightly packed mix of older streets, large housing estates, small houses with gardens and green spaces, with neighbouring communes on every side.
The most distinctive part of the map is the Cité-jardin, a garden city built in the 1920s and 1930s to give workers decent housing. Its streets curve gently around small squares and shared greens, and the brick houses are grouped in careful clusters. The pattern stands out clearly against the straighter blocks around it.
Next to the town, the Parc départemental Georges-Valbon, still often called the Parc de La Courneuve, runs along part of its edge with lawns, woods and lakes.
