Starkville is the seat of Oktibbeha County in east-central Mississippi and the home of Mississippi State University. From above, the town has two parts: a compact downtown grid centred on Main Street, and to the east, the university's large campus of wide lawns, curving drives and large buildings.
At the heart of the campus is the Drill Field, a broad open lawn that anchors the university's layout. Mississippi State is also known for the cowbells fans ring at football games. Around town and campus, suburban streets, shopping corridors and wooded land spread out into the surrounding countryside.
