Staryy Oskol lies on the Oskol river in the Belgorod region, and from above the city divides into two contrasting parts. The historic centre, on the hilly right bank, has an older, irregular street pattern shaped by slopes and ravines. Across the river, large planned microdistricts extend in orderly blocks of apartment buildings separated by wide avenues.
The river and its smaller tributaries run through the middle of the map with reservoirs and floodplain meadows, giving the composition a soft band of water and green. Industrial zones, including a large steel works, sit on the outskirts, connected to the city by roads and rail lines.
Founded in the late sixteenth century as a fortress on Russia's southern frontier, Staryy Oskol grew rapidly in the twentieth century with the development of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly's iron ore deposits. A Staryy Oskol map poster shows a city where an old town and a planned industrial city meet across one river.
The Oskol river and its floodplain cross the city, forming a green and watery band that separates the old centre from the newer districts.
On the higher bank, the historic centre follows hills and ravines, with streets that curve and branch rather than following a strict grid.
Planned residential districts built in the later twentieth century fill large, regular blocks framed by broad avenues, a clear geometric pattern on the map.
