Stavroúpoli lies on the western side of Thessaloniki, where the city rises from the flat land near the port toward the hills. On a map it is a tight, almost continuous mesh of streets. Short blocks are filled edge to edge with apartment buildings. The pattern is regular in places and bends where the ground climbs.
Much of the district was settled in the twentieth century, when refugees from Asia Minor and Thrace arrived after 1922. It later grew into a crowded residential area. Since 2011 it has been part of the Pavlos Melas municipality, but the old name is still in everyday use.

The streets bend where the ground rises toward the hills west of Thessaloniki. The terrain shows through as small shifts in the grid rather than as open space.
