Sulaymaniyah was founded in 1784 by Ibrahim Pasha Baban as the capital of the Kurdish Baban principality, and named after Sulayman Pasha, the Ottoman governor of Baghdad at the time. It lies in a valley in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, close to the Iranian border, with mountain ridges rising on several sides.
The Goyija range rises steeply to the northeast of the city, and its lower slopes are now threaded with roads and viewpoints. The mountains set a hard limit on growth in that direction, so the city has spread along the valley instead. As it expanded, a series of ring roads was built around the centre, and they show up from above as broad concentric loops.
Sulaymaniyah has long been regarded as the cultural capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, known for its poets, publishers and universities and for the Sulaymaniyah Museum. A Sulaymaniyah map poster shows the compact knot of the old bazaar quarter at the middle, the rings expanding outward around it, and the mountain edge where the streets finally stop.
The oldest part of the city is a tight cluster of lanes and covered markets near the centre. It forms the densest area on the map and the point from which the city grew.
Successive loops of wide roads encircle the centre at increasing distances. On the poster they give the city a layered, almost radial shape that is rare in the region.
The mountain rising northeast of the city marks a sharp natural boundary. Winding roads climb its lower slopes, and above them the map falls away into open space.

Many Kurds abroad keep a strong attachment to Sulaymaniyah, and a map of its streets, rings and mountain edge is a quiet way to bring the city into a home far away. It also suits anyone who studied or worked there.
Personalise the title, add a subtitle such as a neighbourhood or a year, and edit the coordinates line. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Printed posters are made by partners in more than 30 countries.
