Sun City lies northwest of Phoenix and is one of the best-known examples of American planned communities. Developer Del Webb opened it in 1960 as a place designed for active retirement. Its streets are laid out unlike almost anywhere else: many neighbourhoods are arranged in large circles, with houses set along concentric rings and roads radiating outward like spokes.
Golf courses weave through the community, forming long green corridors between the housing, and recreation centres sit at the heart of several of the circular districts. Grand Avenue and the railway beside it cross the area on a diagonal, cutting through the regular grid of the wider Phoenix metro.
A Sun City map poster is one of the most graphic street maps anywhere. The rings, spokes and fairways form a pattern that looks almost like a drawing, set against the straight section-line roads of the surrounding desert.
Whole neighbourhoods are laid out as concentric rings with radiating streets, a pattern that reads instantly and beautifully from above.
Long, winding courses thread between the housing, appearing on the map as open ribbons that break up the dense rings.
The diagonal highway and rail line cross the community at an angle, the one strong line that breaks from the local geometry.

Ko e hā ʻa Sun City
The map suits people who retired here, family members who visited, and anyone fascinated by postwar American planning. The circular layout makes it one of the most distinctive street patterns a poster can show.
You can set the title and subtitle, perhaps with the year someone moved in, and adjust the coordinates line. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand suits the desert location.
