Sungurlu lies in the west of Çorum Province, on the high, open plateau of central Anatolia. The town spreads across gently sloping ground. Its older streets are tighter and more irregular near the centre, and newer blocks are laid out more regularly toward the edges. Around it, the landscape is broad and agricultural, with roads striking out in long lines toward neighbouring towns and villages.
For generations, travellers heading to Hattusa, the ancient Hittite capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, passed through Sungurlu as the nearest sizeable town. The ruins lie some distance to the southeast at Boğazkale. A Sungurlu map poster captures the town as a quiet regional centre on that historic route across the plateau.
