Sutton Coldfield lies about seven miles north-east of central Birmingham, and on a map it is immediately recognisable by the vast green space on its western side. Sutton Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe, fills a great irregular block of the frame with woodland, open heath, wetland and a string of pools, crossed only by footpaths and a few roads.
East of the park, the town centre gathers around the Parade and the railway, with suburban streets spreading out in curving crescents, closes and tree-lined avenues. Neighbourhoods such as Four Oaks, Boldmere and Walmley each add their own pattern, from Victorian roads to postwar estates, held together by main roads leading south toward Birmingham.
Sutton Coldfield became a Royal Town under a charter granted by Henry VIII in 1528, at the request of Bishop John Vesey, and the charter placed the park in the hands of the townspeople. It has been part of Birmingham since 1974. A Sutton Coldfield map poster captures the balance between leafy suburb and ancient parkland that defines the town.
More than two thousand acres of woodland, heath and wetland spread across the western side of the town, a large open shape outlined by the park boundary and dotted with pools.
Several pools, including Powell's Pool and Blackroot Pool, sit within and around the park, small dark shapes that punctuate the pale open ground of the reserve.
East of the park, residential roads curve into crescents and closes, a fine and varied pattern that shows the town's growth from Victorian villas to modern estates.
