Tanay is one of the largest municipalities in Rizal province by land area, and most of that land is upland. On a map the town proper appears as a small, orderly cluster of streets in the lowlands near Laguna de Bay. The rest is a wide expanse of hills and valleys rising into the foothills of the Sierra Madre, crossed by a few winding roads.
That landscape is what draws visitors from Metro Manila. Daranak Falls lies close to the town centre. Further out, Mount Daraitan and the Tinipak River, with its pale limestone boulders, have become popular for hiking and swimming. Along the Marcos Highway, the mountain road that climbs east through the municipality, viewpoints and roadside stops look over the ridges and the lake below.
A Tanay map poster emphasises this unusual balance, with a modest town and a very large landscape around it. The street grid takes up only a small part of the map, while mountain roads trace long, looping curves through otherwise empty terrain. In black and white it has an airy, almost topographic feel.
The Marcos Highway climbs through Tanay's uplands in a long series of bends. It is the most expressive single line on the map, rising from the lowlands toward the Sierra Madre.
Around Daraitan, the river winds through limestone country beneath Mount Daraitan. Here the map is sparse and dominated by the course of the water.
The town proper sits in a compact grid near the lakeshore lowlands. It is the densest part of an otherwise open and rugged municipality.

Ko e hā ʻa Tanay
Tanay is where many people from Manila go for fresh air, a first hike or a quiet weekend in the hills, and where local families have lived far longer. A map of its winding roads captures that sense of stepping away from the city.
