Tandur lies in Vikarabad district in the west of Telangana, on the Deccan plateau not far from the border with Karnataka. The land is open and gently rolling, with outcrops of stone and wide stretches of farmland. On a map, the town is a dense, compact centre of market streets and residential lanes. Roads run out from it toward Hyderabad, Vikarabad and the Karnataka side.
The area is known across southern India for Tandur stone, a hard limestone quarried nearby and cut into slabs for floors and paving. Quarries appear on the map as irregular clearings around the town, a feature few other places have. A railway line also passes through, and the station is one of the fixed points of the street plan.
The area is also known for its red gram, the toor dal grown in its black soils, which carries a geographical indication. A Tandur map poster brings the market town, the railway and the landscape of stone and farms into one clear image. It is a portrait of a place that lives off what lies beneath its ground.
Short, closely packed streets form the heart of the town. On the poster it is a dark knot, and the main roads leave it in several directions.
Quarry sites around the town show up as irregular open shapes among the fields. They are a direct trace of the limestone industry that made the name Tandur familiar.
The line crosses the town on its route through western Telangana. It is a long straight stroke that cuts across the looser pattern of roads and fields.
