Taoyuan sits on the tableland west of Taipei, and its map covers a dense urban core surrounded by a landscape that looks unlike any other in Taiwan. The area is scattered with hundreds of irrigation ponds, dug over centuries to store water for farming, and on a map they appear as small rounded shapes among the fields and roads. The central district has a close network of streets and main avenues crossing it.
The city is home to Taoyuan International Airport, Taiwan's main gateway, which sits near the coast to the north-west. An airport metro line connects it with Taoyuan and Taipei, and the high-speed rail also has a station in the city. Taoyuan has grown rapidly as an industrial and residential centre, with many people working in its factories and technology parks.
