Tarakan occupies most of a small island off the northeastern coast of Borneo, in the Indonesian province of North Kalimantan. On the map, the coastline defines everything: the city spreads along the shore, while mangroves, inlets and wetlands fill parts of the edge. Inland, low hills and forest remain between the built-up areas.
The island has long been known for oil production, and it was the site of heavy fighting during the Second World War, including a major battle in 1945. Today, the city also protects a mangrove and proboscis monkey conservation area close to the urban centre, a rare example of such wildlife living inside a city.
A Tarakan map poster shows an island city in full, with water on every side. In black and white, the irregular coastline and the mangrove channels frame the grid of streets, while the airport and port stand out as distinct shapes. It is a strong image for people from North Kalimantan and for anyone drawn to maps where land and sea meet so closely.
The city is surrounded by water, with an irregular shoreline of inlets, beaches and mangroves that gives the map a clear outline.
A protected mangrove forest close to the centre is home to proboscis monkeys and appears as a green patch among city streets.
Low, forested hills rise between parts of the city, creating open spaces that separate different districts on the island.
